Garrett Ace 250 Review
If you are looking to buy a good quality metal detector at an affordable price that is suitable for beginners, then the Garrett Ace 250 should be at the top of your list.
This very popular model is in fact the best selling metal detector in the world and is recommended by those in the know as one of the very best choices for those new to metal detecting.
With the same ease of use and user friendliness as the 150 but with added capabilities, it isn’t hard to see why so many people choose this model as their very first metal detector.
In our Garrett Ace 250 review we will be taking a closer inspection at the features and capabilities of this almost iconic model. Despite the affordable price tag the Ace 250 has very good build quality and like all Garrett metal detectors it offers excellent value for money.
Let’s take a look!
Garrett Ace 250 Design, Ease Of Use and Functionality
The Ace 250 is designed with beginners in mind and is very similar to the Garrett Ace 150 in terms of been an easy to use metal detector. The most notable difference between the two is the addition of 3 extra buttons giving the 250 added functionality in the field, more on those later!
As you might expect keeping the operation of this model as simple as possible was a top priority when designing it. Garrett have done an excellent job in this department which is mainly due to their “touch and go technology”. This basically means that all you have to do is push a button and you are ready to go. This isn’t just good marketing it is true that this metal detector really is that easy to operate.
The overall design is quite lightweight and weighing only 2kg it is friendly on the muscles. The lightweight design doesn’t sacrifice any of the build quality though and it is as durable as they come. The ability to adjust the main stem from 42″ to 51″ means it can be used by both adults and children from about 8 years old upwards.
Another positive feature is how quick and easy it can be assembled and disassembled. The Garrett 250 can be broken down in to its three main components in a matter of moments for storage or portability. In terms of portability it can easily fit in the boot of even a small car or in a good size rucksack.
With a padded arm/elbow rest and a thick padded foam handle grip the Garrett Ace 250 is a comfortable metal detector to use. In combination with its overall lightweight the design is well suited for beginners.
The control panel of the 250 is designed in a way that makes it very simple to navigate through the various functions. In total there are 6 buttons and they are all within a easy thumbs reach of each other.
Below is a quick overview of the functions of each button.
Power – Simple on/off switch.
Mode – Click through the 5 different hunting modes and choose from all metal, jewellery, coins, relics or custom mode.
Sensitivity – This button allows you to increase or decrease the sensitivity.
Pinpoint – The Pinpoint button helps you to determine the exact location of a target. This is a feature that you don’t get with the 150.
Discrimination & Elimination – These two buttons work together and allow you to disregard unwanted targets.
There is a basic LED display which shows the current mode setting, target depth indicator, sensitivity bar, metal composition indicator and the bar for discrimination. Unfortunately there isn’t a LED backlight with this model.
If you have read my review on the 150 you may remember that I mentioned how noisy the audio signals were and the same can be said of the Ace 250 . For this reason I would strongly advise on utilising the headphone port and buying a set of headphones, but do remember to buy a set with volume control!
To power up the Ace 250 requires a set of 4 AA batteries. The long battery life of Garrett metal detectors is something the brand are well-known for and a set of batteries will give you between 25 and 30 hours of treasure hunting. Unlike with the 150 there is a battery level indicator with this model.
Ace 250 Hunting Modes
For many the five different modes are one of the main selling points of this metal detector. In addition the 8″ inch depth is an improvement of 2″ on the 150.
All Metal – This mode detects all types of metals including Iron and is best for when you just want to dig every target that your detector picks up.
Jewellery – Jewellery mode is designed for the treasure hunters out there with discrimination set to avoid junk signals such as nails and bottle caps. Watches, rings, bracelets and other jewellery are some of the items you can expect to find if you are lucky.
Coins – Eliminates all junk/trash targets including iron, bottle caps etc. I find this mode great for areas where there tends to be lots of rubbish.
Relics – The relic mode is similar to the coin mode and it eliminates junk signals, however it keeps targets that register on the low conductivity like lead and brass
Custom – The custom mode is a great feature for when you have got the hang of how to use the Ace 250. It allows you to decide how it reacts to different targets and metals via adjustment of the 8 sensitivity levels and 5 discrimination patterns
ACE 250 Coils
The Ace 250 metal detector comes with a 6.5″ x 9″ PROformance searchcoil as standard. This is an elliptical coil which has the benefit of been more focused than a circular coil. If you prefer more depth than the PROformance has to offer there is the option to upgrade to a DD coil.
In fact there are a number of coils available for the 250 with a variety of different purposes. Below is a list of coils that can be bought for the 250.
- 5″x 8″ DD submersible search coil – Great for use on beaches
- 4.5″ Ace Sniper Search Coil – .Perfect for finding smaller target in areas full of trash/junk
- 8.5″ x 11″ Ace DD Search coil – For those who want additional depth and increased stability
One question many people ask about this metal detector is, is the Garrett Ace 250 waterproof? The answer to this question is yes and no. The coil is waterproof and fully submersible but the control box isn’t. Due to this I would advise on only using it in shallow water and be sure to invest in a control box cover if you do use it for beach detecting.
Garrett Ace 250 Video
The instructional video below explains how to operate the 250 and what functions and capabilities it has.
- Excellent value for money
- Audio and visual target-id
- Easy to operate
- Long battery life
- 2 year warranty
- No volume control
- No LED backlight
To conclude my Garrett Ace 250 review I would like to start with the price. It has to be said that there aren’t many beginner metal detectors that offer the features that you get with this model at such an incredible price. This is great for those new to metal detecting that don’t want to spend a fortune on a good quality metal detector.
With very good overall performance and been sensitive enough to find targets up to 8″ deep the Garrett 250 comes highly recommended. With greater capabilities than the 150 and been more affordable than the Euro Ace 350, it offers a good mix of affordability and top quality features making it an excellent choice for beginners.
